Laser Vein Ablation
a new minimally invasive option

What are varicose veins?
Veins carry blood from our legs upward, against gravity, back to the heart. These veins have one-way valves to prevent the blood from flowing backwards, down the legs. These valves may fail to close tightly, allowing blood to flow backwards and pool in the legs. This causes the bulging and twisting characteristic of varicose veins.
Causes of varicose veins include:

  • Inherited
  • Previous pregnancy
  • Increasing age
  • Obesity
  • Trauma

What problems are caused by varicose veins?
The unpleasant appearance of varicose veins is often bothersome, but many people have symptoms related to their varicose veins. Also, severe medical complications can arise if varicose veins are left untreated.

Common Symptoms:

  • Aching or cramping
  • Heaviness or swelling
  • Skin discoloration

If Left Untreated, Possible Complications of Varicose Veins:

  • Skin ulceration
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clots

What is Laser Vein Ablation?
Venous Ablation is an outpatient procedure performed in our physician’s office or in an outpatient surgery center. After anesthetizing the skin, an ultrasound of the veins of the leg is performed. Under ultrasound guidance, a thin laser fiber is inserted into the vein. A highly concentrated beam of laser light is then emitted through the fiber, which eliminates the abnormal vein.

By delivering the exact wavelength of laser energy to just the right tissue, the problem vein closes. The body automatically routes the blood to other healthy veins. This entire procedure only takes about 45 minutes.

Is Laser Vein Ablation painful?
Most patients agree that the procedure is not painful. Patients are up and walking as soon as it’s over, able to return to full normal activity…thus with no “recovery period” needed. Slight swelling may occur right after the procedure, but immediate results will be evident.

How soon will results be evident, and will they last?
The procedure has an outstanding 97% record of success, with no reoccurrence in the veins that were treated. In some cases, follow-up procedures may be desired to obtain optimal aesthetic results.

Why is Laser Vein Ablation preferable over conventional surgery?
The use of medical laser technology eliminates many of the headaches associated with surgery, such as considerable preparation, general anesthesia, the risk of infection, pain and swelling in the affected areas, and a lengthy recovery period.
In contrast, Laser Vein Ablation is minimally invasive. Because the entry point into the vein is extremely small, it doesn’t even require stitches. Risk of infection is extremely low, with no recovery period needed.

Will insurance cover the procedure?
Many insurance companies will cover the expense of this exciting new option. After an initial ultrasound and consultation, we will contact your insurance provider to determine eligibility.

Is the Laser Vein Ablation technique safe?
Medical lasers have proven their safety and effectiveness through years of use in many different medical procedures, from ophthalmology to dermatology. In the hands of skilled physicians such as Interventional Radiologists, lasers offer far less risk and complications than conventional surgery.

Who performs Laser Vein Ablation?
MLaser Vein Ablation is performed by Vista Interventional Radiologists, a subspecialty group of Vista Radiology, P.C. Vista Radiology is the largest and most sub-specialized radiology practice in East Tennessee, with four fellowship- trained Interventional Radiologists.

Interventional Radiologists (IRs) are physicians specially trained in non-surgical treatments using imaging guidance, such as venous ablation. Our specialty has been performing venous imaging and treatment for many years. We use our expertise in reading ultrasound and x-rays to guide tiny instruments through blood vessels or skin to treat diseases without surgery.

Our Interventional Radiologists at Vista are the most experienced, well-trained physicians offering this treatment in Knoxville and the surrounding area. Board-certified radiologists, our specialized training is certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties
